I love incense, and I love smudging the house to clear negativity and to make it smell fabulous. I’m a huge fan of sweetgrass and white sage, and when I feel like I need to clear out the cobwebs, I’ll grab my abalone shell and some loose herbs to make a lap around the house. The thing is, randomly waving around a smudge stick and walking to every little corner gets tedious, and I’d never found a smudge fan that I liked and was within my budget (there are some fantastically beautiful ones out there, don’t get me wrong, but I’d never shell out $200 for one. Too poor, y’know?).
So when I went to the park and saw the local geese were molting EVERYWHERE, I picked up the ones I came across and started fiddling with ideas of what to do with them. At first I wasn’t thinking fan- I was thinking “cool! I can start collecting feathers again!” but when I got home I held them and played with them and decided “well hell, I’ll make a smudge fan!”
So I did. 7 feathers (5 goose, 2 dove feathers lovingly given to me by a friend), 6 chopsicks, half a spool of thread and a lot of superglue later, I came up with this.
Originally I was going to have them fanned out very wide, but due to issues with the way it would sit on the handle, I decided to just go with what it wanted to do, and I couldn’t be happier!
I might be adding more detail as I go, but that’s mainly because anything I made is in a constant process of revision. If I can make it better, I want to- so I will.
